YOUNG CAPPELLO TAKES MINI SPRINT VICTORY!
By-Sandy Combs
9-11-10

21 AMSA Mini Sprints invaded Prescott Valley Raceway but only one 14 year old took home the prize. 20 of the Mini Sprints took the green in their 20 lap affair. Kenny Brewer of New Mexico captured the lead first holding off Dylan Cappello and Brandon Hacker. Lap three the turmoil got out of control as the yellow for Drew Holleran flew, two cars got together in turn four and Matt Jackson landed upside down. He was unhurt and the green flew again. Before a lap could be competed Paul Martin found himself also flipping. Red flew again. After all the clean up the race really got underway and remained yellow and redless all the way to the checkered. K. Brewer just couldn't shake Cappello and at lap seven Hacker got by Cappello for the runner up spot. At half way it was Brewer, Hacker and Cappello. One lap later Hacker fell out with problems giving second to Cappello and now Garrett Guilkey was in third. Laps 14 and 15 saw the leaders in heavy traffic and weaving cautiously through. Three laps from the checkered Cappello found his way around Brewer and then took it in for the win. Brewer was a close second ahead of Guilkey, Mike Brewer and Ken Caskey. Finishing out the top ten were Allen Saine, Dave Vaness, Tyler Deane, Dustin Cormany and Pat Wing.

The Pure Stock points are super close and this was their next to last race of the season and they made it a good one. Mike Colclasure jumped into the lead first holding off Steve Shumaker and Pat Shumaker. At lap five Scott Kleintop took over third and was trying to hold off George Fronsman behind him. The top four cars were stretching out their lead from the pack and were even in trophy form many laps, two by two. Lap ten saw Fronsman move up to third and one lap later Scott Kleintop took the point. Lap 11 had the only yellow of the event. At this yellow Kleintop was moved back for jumping the start and the lead was given to second place, Steve Shumaker. Shumaker had Colclasure, Fronsman and Kleintop right behind him and any mistake could have sent him to fourth. But he held on and held them all off to take his first win of the season. Second went to Colclasure ahead of Fronsman, Kleintop and Eddie Bogan. Trophies were provided by Tri-City Towing. 6th thru 10th were Frank Geiger, Ron Hull, Jason Parks. Zach Seitzer and Tim Palmer.

The Challenge Cup Sprints again brought out ten cars and are growing each week. This week they just couldn't stay off the berm and the only yellows of the race were for tires being knocked onto the track. Tim Beal looked strong as he led the pack to lap six. Then John Brinkley found the speed and took over the top spot. One lap later Fritz Croy took second and then went after Brinkley. Brinkley kept his foot into it and took it all the way to the win and the Gecko Automotive Glass trophy. Second to Croy ahead of Bryan Swinehart, Tim Beal and Art Mankel III.

The Super Stocks were light on cars but heavy on action as they went all 20 laps in their feature with no yellows. Brad Auringer led lap one but Buff VanLandingham took over at the second round to take the front. Three laps later George Fronsman overtook the lead. VanLandingham tried to come back but just didn't have the speed and Fronsman took home the win and the Prescott Valley Auto Brokers trophy. VanLandingham was second ahead of Auringer, David Wright and Henry Guenther.

Billy VanMeter looked like he had another feature in the AODC Outlaw Dwarf cars but his mount started slowing down and at lap ten he relinquished the lead to Jeff Adams. Adams then held down the front spot holding off Kenny Hodgkins and Jim Ward. At the white it was Adams, Hodgkins and Fred Defibaugh and they finished that way with Adams taking his first PVR win. Fourth to Jim Ward and fifth went to AJ Breu. Trophies were sponsored by Bedrock Remodeling.
